20-minute Red Lentil Dahl

Here is a recipe that takes little time, requires basic ingredients and is inexpensive to make. If you have never cooked before this thick soup can ease you into a world of real homemade goodies. Use it as a main or a side dish. It goes well with meat. Add starches such as rice, potatoes, or pasta only if you want to put on weight.  Watch portions if you have diabetes. Stores well in a fridge.

  • 2 cups of red lentils
  • 5 cups of water
  • 1 tbsp of tumeric
  • 2 medium onions
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1.5 cans (about 300ml) of tomato paste
  • 1.5 – 2 tbsp of garam masala


  1. Cook lentils with tumeric in water till soft, about 15-20 min. Drain
  2. Saute onion and garlic
  3. Add onion mix, tomato paste and garam masala and 1-2 cups of water to lentils. Simmer another 15 min.
