The Bone Detective
Find Your Gaps, Rebuild Your Strength, Your Way
A Level E Gap Map from the Get an A in Health series
Your DEXA gave you a number. This book helps you find the reason.
It was supposed to be a routine check-up. Ten minutes, two numbers, and a prescription later, you’re sitting in the car in the clinic parking lot, holding a word you didn’t expect: osteoporosis. Or its younger cousin, osteopenia.
Nobody told you why. Nobody asked what you eat, how you sleep, what pills sit in your cabinet, or whether your gut has been grumbling for years. You got a T-score, a leaflet, and an appointment in two years.
Here’s the good news: bones don’t thin for no reason. They leave clues. And you are the best person to find them.
The detective idea
Bone loss is rarely one thing. It’s two or three quiet “gaps” between what your bones need and what they’re getting — and their friends.
The Bone Detective turns you into the investigator:
- Find your gaps. Fifteen short quizzes look at food, gut, movement, muscle, hormones, inflammation, sleep, stress, medications, toxins and your daily setup.
- Check your hunches. Each gap comes with at-home checks and the lab tests that confirm it — no guessing.
- Pick your road. A simple 10-habit routine for busy people, or a full overhaul for ambitious ones.
- Keep score. Track grip, balance, height, blood markers and your DEXA, so you know what’s working long before the next scan.
No lectures. No scare tactics. Just the evidence, your options, and your call.
Quick clue hunt: tick any that sound like you
- I’m a little shorter than I used to be.
- My gums have pulled back, or my teeth have shifted.
- I’ve taken a heartburn pill for more than a year.
- I sit for most of the day.
- I sleep under six hours most nights.
- I was very slim for most of my life, or I’ve done a lot of dieting.
Ticked one or more? Those are clues, not verdicts. The book shows you how to follow each one.
What’s Inside
- Part I — Meet Your Bones. Your bones have day jobs (mineral bank, acid sponge, hormone gland…). Learn the whispers before the break and how to read your DEXA report like a pro.
- Part II — Mind the Gap. Fifteen chapters, fifteen suspects: from calcium that never arrives to the pills that borrow from bone, the night shift, stress, and the heavy metals hiding in “healthy” foods. Finish with your personal Gap Map and your top three suspects.
- Part III — Your Options. The standard prescription, unpacked and explained in plain words. Why fixing the cause beats chasing the count. And the fringe-but-promising ideas, with honest evidence labels.
- Part IV — Your Plan. The Easy Road, the Full Overhaul, Keeping Score, and your Driver’s License.
- Plus: a Bone Level scale (Strong → Fragile) you can track with or without a DEXA, a test directory, food tables and a doctor-visit sheet.
Who it’s for
This book is for you if:
- You’ve just received a DEXA result and want to understand it.
- You want to do something meaningful for your bones — with or without medication.
- You like knowing why, and you’re ready to test, try and track things yourself.
It’s probably not for you if:
- You want one magic pill or someone to make all the decisions for you.

Part of a bigger map
Osteoporosis is a “Level E” condition: the far end of a long road that usually brings company, like weaker muscles, stiffer joints and blood pressure that misbehaves.
The Bone Detective is the first of the Level E Gap Maps, a set of detective books for the conditions on that road. Want to know where you stand overall? Take the 49-question Health Level test in Get an A in Health.
FAQ
- Do I have to stop my medication? No. The book explains what the common drugs do well and what they don’t, so you can decide with your doctor. Never stop a prescribed medicine on your own.
- I have osteopenia, not osteoporosis. Is this for me? Even more so. The earlier the change begins, the more room you have to move.
- Is it only for women? No. Men lose bone too, and the book covers men’s hormones and risks.
- Do I need lots of expensive tests? No. Many checks are done at home with a chair, a wall and a tape measure.
- Do I need the Workbook? No. The book stands on its own; the Workbook is for recording and comparing your results.
