Are you wondering what can lower blood pressure within minutes without having to double up on your heart medication?
Is there a method that can help with blood pressure spikes that is safe and always available without risking any negative side effects?
.
What causes blood pressure spikes?
Take a minute to consider the reason WHY you have spiked blood pressure in the first place. Contrary to a popular belief, hypertension is not any “bad health luck”, inevitable “genetic fate”. It is a result of long-standing lifestyle errors.
Hypertension is reversible. But to stop battling blood pressure spikes for the rest of your life, you need to identify and correct these errors. Those innocent spikes can turn vicious and eventually take over your life where instead of a family doctor gently suggesting one prevention pill, you can end up having an entire cardiac department taking care of the numbers.
What can lower blood pressure permanently?
Blood pressure spikes have many different causes, from nutrition to stress. Good news is that nearly all of them are under your own control. To start on your health journey grab a copy of The Ultimate Guide and follow the instructions.
This simple technique can lower blood pressure in minutes
Believe or not, the technique described below can do wonders for lowering blood pressure spikes.
Why? Because it works on relaxing blood vessels. Blood vessels are under the control of the nervous systems, and this is under the control of the breathing rate.
Did you know that slow steady deep breathing calms the nervous system? This is exactly the mechanism what can lower blood pressure. Calm nervous system equals calm heart. And calm heart means no more blood pressure spikes.
Caveat: even thought multiple studies confirmed such effect, don’t try to use the technique instead of your prescription meds. The methods described below, although powerful, cannot substitute your pills overnight. It takes more than this to permanently lower blood pressure.
How to lower blood pressure immediately
Follow these four steps.
- Take a breath from your belly (not shoulders!) while counting slowly to four.
- Stop for a count of two and then release your breath slowly on a count of four again.
- Stop for a second before you take another breath. Make sure the breath is always from the belly, never from the neck or shoulders.
- Repeat.
Studies show that this breathing method can lower the numbers by as much as 20 points. But to get that effect you must do the technique perfectly. Check the following points.
- Scan your body for any tension. Your blood vessel tone parallels your muscle tone. Although you cannot feel your blood vessels you can feel your muscles and sense any tension in them.
- Check your shoulders. Are they riding high? Can you drop them?
- Check your back. Is there any tension there?
- Check your neck, arms, feet and spine, part by part very slowly.
- Take time. Fast pace will make you more anxious and contribute to an even bigger blood pressure spike. Only slow pace will make this exercise worthwhile. If you find any tension anywhere, stop and let the tension melt into your breath.
- Aim for about 6 breaths per minute.
Your job is to bring your breath to its natural and effortless slow pace within just minutes. You should feel comfortable and your breath should not feel artificial. This “effortless” trick is exactly what can lower blood pressure immediately.
If you did the exercise right you should notice a significant drop in your numbers right away. If you do not, try again. Make sure that this time you are really slowing down and relaxing all the muscles. Although this task may feel difficult and cumbersome at first mastering your nervous system is of vital importance to your well-being.

Mastering breathing is a vital skill. Take time to perfect it. It is your super-powerful weapon against cardiovascular stress. Six breaths a minute is what you want. This is a naturally relaxing cycle that can save you from a litany of medical problems.

Greetings from New Zealand. Pleased to find your very informative website today as I am looking to help stabilise my blood pressure – if its possible. I have been on medication for hypertension for 15 years and I am seeing my doctor in 2 days as I have had 3 recent readings around 160/100. But on my visits to him a year ago and in February of this year my blood pressure readings were within normal range. I am 65.
I tried out the breathing exercise thinking if I could manage my breathing it may be helpful. I did it for a couple of minutes then found my finger tips and lips were very slightly tingly. Could you advise what I may have been doing wrong? Or is this something I should mention to my doctor?
Thank you in anticipation
Kind regards
Janet
Hi Janet,
High diastolic numbers (bottom numbers) are frequently related to increased blood viscosity. Find somebody that can do Live Blood Microscopy locally for you and/or check the following parameters: INR, fibrinogen, and homa. These are blood test. Knowing it you will find out the underlying causes of high blood pressure, because not all cardiovascular problems are due to faulty breathing.

My name is kriti.. And I am 21 years old girl and my mother is suffering from high blood pressure and diabetes also so what are the tips to use and cure diabetes and high blood pressure?
Hi Kriti, diabetes type 2 and high blood pressure are lifestyle dependent. Absolutely the first thing your mom has to look at is food quality. High potassium foods, raw foods are best to start with. Have your mom identify junk and processed food and eliminate those. Help her identify and limit high carbohydrate staples such as grains and potatoes and replace them with high nutrient foods such as vegetables. Avoid frying. Throw away cooking oils. Stick to coconut oil only. Learn how to cook yourself and show your mom how healthy food is prepared.
I understand you want to help her, but you can’t force anyone. You need to be clear what your mom wants. If your mom prefers sticking to old habits rather then getting healthier than you need to honor that. All you can do is to make your mom aware how much she means to you and why her health is important to you. From then on she has to make her own choice.
Also be aware that managing and curing a disease are two different things. Managing can be achieved through dieting and the results can be seen within few days. Curing takes much longer and requires changes to many lifestyle habits.
Good luck with taking your mom on a healthier path. You need a long talk.

Greetings from India. I am Gunjan , 37 and has been witnessing high blood pressure for last 1 year though not so frequently, so far the highest reading I have for sys. was 142 and for dys. it was 110 however they both never raised together, I am very scared about going on allopathic medicine as they are highly addictive and doing everything possible to avoid that treatment . I especially feel hypertension when I hear something stressful. Please advise if I should go for allopathic medicine.
Hi Gunjan,
I understand your concern. I know a lot of patients that do not want to use prescription medication due to their side effects. In many cases it is absolutely possible to avoid the drugs while working on blood pressure correction. In your case however, I would strongly suggest to use the allopathic medication. Blood pressure fluctuates all the time and this may not be your highest reading. Also, the correction of blood pressure may take you a while. Stay safe. The addictive effects of medications are much smaller than the possibility of organ damage due to vessel rupture.

Once your blood pressure is in a safe range you can start working on lowering it permanently through a corrective lifestyle methods.
so glad to have run across this! wish you were local to be a PCP. my md fixes one drug’s side effects with another drug. told them my boy was running high at home at my appointment and they said well, it’s ok here. now i’m at home with 154/102. i’m 32 years old. thanks for the post.
JAT,
I have never had high blood pressure. Last Dr appt for ear infection it was over the top
172/78 I have been checking it randomly throughout the day and it is all over the map??
172 -118 / 69 – 104
I would really like to balance this out with Diet and Exercise. Is it possible to keep monitoring and do this with high readings? I do see my dr again today for ear re-evaluation. Just not happy to take a bunch of meds.
57 year old woman/athlete/
thanks for any advise or recommendations.
Blood pressure issues do not usually start overnight. They problem with BP could have developed over months, or even years, but you may have either not checked the numbers regularly, or happen to check them at the time when they were normal.
Any infection can change blood pressure. The reaction is simply due to stress put on the immune, nervous, and circulatory system. Please wait till you recover completely and then retest. Make sure that you test while sitting and relaxing, otherwise you will get false readings.
If you are an athlete, slow down a little bit, take a few days of break. You do not want any more stress on your body.
Dietary changes should start with hydration. Dehydration can increase blood pressure mimicking hypertension. After water requirements are satisfied, add foods that increase zeta potential like lemon, and thin the blood like chia seed, fatty fish, vanilla, etc. Avoid any processed foods as they contain ingredients lowering zeta potential (read: they make sludge out of blood) and sodium, which may aggravate situation in your case.
Read my article on types of fluctuating blood pressure LINK: http://drdnaturopath.com/five-types-of-fluctuating-blood-pressure/ It explains how different BP numbers are associated with different underlying causes.
Oh, BTW, please finish the course of your antibiotics. If you don’t, it will contribute to creating antibiotic-resistant bacteria. I am not an advocate of frivolous use of drugs, but some things just make sense.
I’m currently at 240/140, so I am going to try this breathing technique. I did some fast breathing years ago that worked for me. If it doesnt work, off to the doctor. My normal used to be 211/199, so I dont know if this is worse or better! I dont expect to be around much longer…
Hi Dorothy,
Thank you for the information you have shared. I have missed my doctors appointment and am now out of blood pressure medication. The breathing as helped me lower my blood pressure quickly and on my own. I was wondering what tips you have for someone like me to lower my blood pressure naturally without medication at all. I am a 30 year old women. Not over weight and exercise every morning. I have high blood pressure due to PKD, a kidney disease. It seems that diet and exercise alone will never been enough for me to keep my blood pressure down naturally, but maybe I am doing something wrong. Are there specific exercises that help? Specific foods I should eat every day?
Thank you in advance for your help!
I think you should use breathing technique and off to the doctor at the same time. You may not like prescription meds, but they may be the best temporary solution for now. Once your BP is in no-danger zone, take steps to reverse it permanently.
Hi Karissa,
I would highly recommend to find a reputable homeopathic doctor. Homeopathy can do wonders when lifestyle is supporting health. Don’t hesitate. I’ve seen some “miracles” in my life. No guarantees, but definitely a worthwhile pursuit.
I am 46 yr old male, from past one year my reading are between 150/100 to 190/120. That’s even when I am taking beta blockers prescribed by the doctors. I start getting the high bp symptoms of headache, burrping, dizziness when it crosses 160/110. How I can bring this back to normal without any medication.
It looks like you had high blood pressure for a while. Although there are techniques that immediately reduce blood pressure, these are temporary. You need solutions that are longer lasting AKA lifestyle changes. There are two areas that high blood pressure responds to most favorably: weight loss and stress reduction. Forget about lotions, potions, and promises behind them. Even hawthorn berries and potassium supplements work temporary. The best approach is to live a healthy lifestyle without falling into fad traps like low-fat, veganism, or ketogenic diet. It may take a few months, maybe a year, but you will be greatly rewarded. You may not only lose your hypertension, but you can add to your functional longevity, especially if you embrace intense exercise.
Thanks for your quick advice, How the breathing techniques are useful here, and what should be right procedure to take garlic, ginger, lemon to reduce the readings back towards normal. I feel I get more tensed when i see these readings.
Hello Dr. D,
My mom is 61 and has been a diabetic since she was a young adult. She uses insulin for her glucose and her A1C has been great for many years. The last A1C was 6.4. I wanted to ask you for help because her blood pressure fluctuates. There are some mornings and other times through out the day that she gets hypotension after eating or after exercising with measurements of 90/45 or 101/54 taken by her home blood pressure machine. Then some other times her blood pressure is 154/77. She only feels bad when it is low and she brings it up wit coffee or coke. Her doctor had her on an ARB losartan combined with thiazide and she kept on getting hypotension. I know fluctuations like this is not good. When I measure her blood pressure in the evening it is usually systolic:120-130 and diastolic 60ish. I have gone with her to her primary physician and she gets white coat syndrome where it goes up to 160 her systolic so he tells her to take the combined ARB. I have seen her get really bad hypotension though with the combined ARB and previously nifedipine. Please help.
The treatment is incorrect. Instead of focusing on lowering blood pressure, a physician should suggest anti-anxiety treatment. Sign up your mom for stress a coping course, meditation, breathing exercises, or other. Unless she develops relaxation-on-demand skills she will be going in circles. Discuss hypotension with your mom’s MD. Low numbers are unacceptable due to short-term and long-term effects. Your mom MUST exercise, but hypotension makes it impossible. Unless she reduces the meds she won’t move forward with her health.
Burping?? Then the upper intestinal gas is also increasing your blood pressure. You have to really do deep breathing along with taking the blood pressure medications. Deep breathing also reduces the trapped gas and high intestinal gas production. If you also have acidity problem, then the acid hurts your chest and throat as you deep breathe. This is a common phenomena, and you should drink water to subside the acid and continue deep breathing.

Hi Raymond,
What is your resting heart rate? High pulse pressure is usually either due to advanced atherosclerosis or prolonged stress. If your resting heart rate is elevated that means you are stressing the body too much. Take a week off from exercise and recheck your heart rate and blood pressure. If there is a substantial difference for the better (RHR + BP) you know what to do. Sometimes too much of a good thing is not that good.
PS. Advanced atherosclerosis manifests itself in loss of flexibility (both mental and physical) as well as hearing loss. Check your range of motion of all your joints and do a simple hearing test before heading to check your calcium score with your cardiologist.
Hello Doctor,
Is it OK to do brisk walking for around 40 to 50minutes even when your blood pressure is around 130-140. The exercise is done for fitness but does it backfire in above pressure range. What is recommended?
Hi Ajit, I do not know your medical history, neither current diagnosis, nor your fitness level. I guess you are asking what brisk walking may be doing to your blood pressure. If you are unsure what is happening during exercise, get yourself a holter monitor and wear it during exertion. The numbers will tell if your brisk walks increase blood pressure to an unacceptable level. In normal circumstances (no meds, no atherosclerosis, no diagnosed diseases) brisk walks are absolutely ok for people with mildly to moderately increased blood pressure.
Hi. Suppopose it is faulty signals from the central nervous system? Will breathing help? I find that breathing like u suggest that engages the parasympathetic nervous system gives me palpitations. Not sure if i should keep teying it anyway or if wont work on bp if some kind of autonomic dysfunction is causing the high bp. I am like david who posted a comment – i dont think i have much longer. Keep getting long lasting spikes – today at doc first 220/110 then 190/117. At home when not spiking its more like 175/100 or 105 but lower in afternoon. Head pounding now and dont know if i shoukd try the breathing again despite palpitations. So its bqck to question of whether in pricipal can help for all causes of high bo. i am not going to go to the ER! Maybe tgere is a way to ease into the good breathing?
If these are your typical numbers, then your blood pressure pattern suggests plaque buildup and narrowing of the arteries. In such case breading can help, but it will not reverse the underlying problem. To thin the blood and remove plaque deposits long-term dietary changes are needed. If your meds and MD are ok with dietary changes you should give green salads, onions, and lemon juice a good try. And of course, no junk AKA processed foods, sugars, or starches. Plaque reversal wont happen overnight however here is an article that can help you deal with high blood pressure in the short-run. http://drdnaturopath.com/an-easy-fix-for-spiking-and-fluctuating-blood-pressure/
I am taking 180mg 2x a day of diltiazem and 1 hydrochlorothiazide. I have anxiety disorder and the more I take my blood pressure the higher it goes. 147/69 last nite but very stressed . It can be as low as 125/62. I don’t want to take more medication but that is what they want me to do. I am not overweight and I exercise regularly and have for years. I am 83 and eat healthy most of the time…no sugar but some processed foods. Also taking Ativan .5 mg or less every day.
Hydrochlorothiazide is known to flush out magnesium, a major mineral controlling response to stress and blood pressure fluctuations. I suggest to hook up with someone who can prescribe the best magnesium type for your body type and a few additional supplements that would restore nutrient balance upset by the drug. Also, don’t over-test your BP and set up a routine to breathe slowly for a few minutes before sitting down to test. My personal opinion is that your diastolic is a tad too low for drug intervention. The best course of action would be to focus on controlling emotions than to force blood pressure down.
